About the Artist

Emily Criswell is an artist living and working in West Seattle, Washington. She was inspired to begin making pottery during the pandemic lockdowns. Having unlocked her true passion, she began working full time as a ceramicist in late 2022 when she purchased a kiln and built a home studio.

Coupe Ceramics was born from Emily's love of traditional majolica earthenware and splatterware, the rich culture of Italian and Greek ceramics, a love of cute foods, little treats, the cosmos and the sea. She enjoys iterating on traditional materials and themes to create modern, more durable household goods and finds immense joy in creating multi-functional wares and products that can be used in more than one way.

Emily has explored many different techniques and enjoys using different methods including wheel throwing, hand building, slab work, colored clay/nerikomi, slip casting and 3D design to bring her work to life.

Currently, she is most inspired by organic modern forms and in her new work she creates elements of organic movement in traditional forms as well as whimsical surface decoration including splatters and hand painted elements.

The magic of Coupe - nestled among the evergreen trees and just a few blocks from the rocky shores of the puget sound in the North Admiral neighborhood of West Seattle - is not just a workspace, but a sanctuary where passion, imagination, and craftsmanship intertwine. Join us on this journey of creating functional art that adds a bit magic to everyday moments.
